Who is Driving this Story?

Week 7

Who is driving? Who is seeing the way ahead?

If its you, what are you seeing? What are you driving through? Are you calm, are you frantic, or something in between? Are you reacting or responding? If you’re reacting, you may not be seeing clearly. Reacting as different from responding usually involves at least partly an old story affecting what you’re perceiving and thus reacting too. How do you come from self leadership? What does that mean anyway? Who in the world is “self”?  Who are you reacting from, is it just a part of you? How do you know?

There is so much fear in our cultural airwaves currently, how is it affecting us?  If you’re reacting from fear, it could be out of scale for the circumstances, unless you have a gun to your head or something equivalently imminently dangerous.  How do we know if its out of scale? Fear puts us in fight or flight, not the best place to use or expand our logic and reasoning abilities. When this happens we can be vulnerable to giving our power away becoming a victim to the circumstances.

i have had the experience of a gun to my head once and another time close enough to be equivalent level of threat. It is strikingly different than most of the rest of my lived experience and i consider myself lucky for that.  And…,  despite my personal work with healing trauma, i am not beyond reacting and living with a level of fear, an undercurrent that can simulate that real imminent lived fear without recognizing at the time, what’s at the root. Even without a similar experience, i think it is part of our journey here to learn to mediate fear.

We are intrinsically affected by our surrounding culture and the narratives that pervade it. i think it’s important to question, openly with curiosity, from a number of angles:

Who is driving your story?

Who or what is driving this story?

Where and when  have you given your power away and how can you reclaim it?
