Lisa Kellogg ~ Artist Statement

i am interested in the between, between form and not form. Between here and there, the process… What form comes out of and returns to.

The space created when someone listens well and deeply, without judgment, open and curious. The invitation to just be. Then to reflect, learn, imagine and create.

The place scientist wander in, to discover new ideas to research. The place healers, artist, musicians, writers, inventors, creatives of all sorts, go in process. The place of daydreams, meditation, contemplation & improvisation…

Out of not knowing, if we can be with uncertainty, trust the process, explore, connect, play, move into and out of form, we create.  Sometimes we create magic. i aspire to make magic and to share my abracadabra.

i  enjoy working in different mediums and i love the cross pollination that comes from exploring various disciplines and mediums. When i left a career in the arts for one in psychology, i hadn’t planned to sidetrack my art for so long, i missed making things with my hands. In 2020, i made a fresh commitment to focus on art, to draw and write daily.

The drawings, i think of as little improvisations, as i play with line, follow form, let go of it and then find it again. The “stream” writes, also little improvisations.

After a year of line only drawings, and a year of working digitally with color and tone, i will continue my daily practice without a particular medium of focus. instead…

What’s next?

Play! The alchemy of play.

In 2003 i took my first theater improvisation class. Not to be a performer, but to build skills. i thought it would be more fun than going to Toast Masters to improve public speaking  necessary for marketing. i had so much fun, i continued to attend class for several years. This new interest in improv coincided with other sparks to pursue the world of play. i think of play as my leading edge. It’s not easy for me to stretch into. And, i think it is very important to bring more play to the world. i’m especially interested in play that is good mischief, mischief that can pull the rug out from under old paradigms; status quo that need to go. Culture jamming kinds of mischief, transformative mischief. (Always with a generous heart and a positive intent.)

*My use of the small “i” on this site is intentional. It reminds me to engage student mind and humility. It also feels playful and since i’m a “serious girl” on a path to be more playful and free, it helps me with this endeavor as well.
